Lizzie Mahaffey

My work includes sculpture, video, and digital paintings. I explore the complexities of grief, childhood, and being a young woman. My personal narratives shaped by profound experiences including child loss and substance abuse, I transform deep emotional experiences into vibrant visual expressions that invite dialogue and reflection.
I find inspiration from colorful movements like wacky post modernism and Memphis design, which resonate with my work being both playful and thought provoking. Embracing thought and play I am able to confront the dualities of sorrow and joy. I work with sculpture, video, and digital paintings that explores those themes. I use videos I have recorded to explore family dynamics and childhood, as well as recordings of my art making and editing processes. I use metal, clay, and acrylic to create functionally designed sculptures inspired by the movements I am interested in. My art reflects not just my experiences but also resonates with others who find solace in shared experiences of resilience and loss. My art is a dialogue and a space where the complexities of life can be explored, understood, and celebrated.
